About Maisha Gray-Diggs, Ph.D

Learn the motivation behind who I am

Dr. Maisha Gray-Diggs (@STEMDrMGD) is a scientist/engineer turned speaker, workshop facilitator, author, and career prep coach. MGD was born and raised in San Francisco’s Western Addition District. She attended a De La Salle Christian Brothers/Daughters of Charity Catholic high school where 2 Greek math teachers (<3 Chris Karas <3 Angie Karas) cultivated her love of math. Her first exposure to science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) was in 1994 as a participant in the Stevens Institute of Technology’s Exploring Career Options in Engineering Science (#ECOES) program, a hands-on program where students explore many different fields of science and engineering. This was the beginning of her career as a scientist/engineer.

MGD would continue her STEM journey by training as a materials scientist and engineer at MIT and Northwestern, obtaining a B.S. and Ph.D. respectively. In her graduate work, she utilized nitroxide-mediated controlled radical polymerization to synthesize various homopolymers and copolymers, most notably gradient copolymers. These materials were utilized as compatibilizers for immiscible polymer blends and to study the kinetics of diffusion-controlled reactions.

Upon completion of her Ph.D., Dr. MGD began her industrial research career at Procter & Gamble (P&G) in Cincinnati. While at P&G, Dr. MGD held roles with increasing managerial responsibility in technology, materials, product development, and analytical across the Baby Care and Beauty businesses. Organizationally, she was a leader in the recruitment and onboarding of talented individuals to P&G and R&D, creating content for several 3 day professional development workshops and speaking on both topics at professional society meetings.

Dr. MGD truly believes that to whom much is given, much is expected (Luke 12:48). She lives this through service to others. She tutors high school students in math, science, and ACT/SAT. She mentors undergraduate and graduate students in the STEM disciplines, providing them with both professional and personal coaching to help prepare them for a career in academia or the corporate world. She speaks to donor families and funeral home directors to encourage their support of organ, eye, and tissue donation. Dr. MGD has served on several board of trustees and advisory boards focused on K-12 students and inner city youth.

Dr. MGD, a 2008 YWCA Rising Star, is an alumna of the Cincinnati USA Regional Chamber’s Women Excel Leadership Program and the Cincinnati YWCA Rising Star Leadership Program. She was recognized as a member of Cincinnati’s Business Courier’s 2010 Forty Under 40 class and as a Cincinnati YMCA 2011 Adult Black & Latino Achiever. She has additionally received numerous P&G recognitions, including stock grants, for outstanding business building contributions and organizational achievements.

Dr. MGD currently resides in Oakland, CA, with her 7 year old twins, William and Maya. After 2 years at The Clorox Company as a R&D Innovation Group Manager, she now is a Senior Talent Acquisition Manager at Microsoft, focused on technical recruiting strategies for Office Products Group and the Bay Area. In her free time, she enjoys traveling, watches all basketball, runs marathons, and cheers for all San Francisco sports teams.
